The reserve is part of the Montseny mountain range. It was established as a Natural Reserve in 1977 and it is managed by Diputació de Barcelona and Diputació de Girona. It is also a UNESCO Biosphere reserve since 1978. The highest peak in the park is Turó de l’Home( 1,706,7m ).
The reserve is united with Parc National des Cévennes (France) since 1987 and with Parque Internacional de la Amistad (Costa Rica and Panama) since 1994, both considered biosphere reserve, too. The three of them carry out trienal programs that enable collaborative actions.
